Travel Guidelines
& Advisory

Essential guidelines, physical preparation advice, packing checklist, and code of conduct for high-altitude Himalayan pilgrimages.

Preparing Mind and Body

A pilgrimage into the high-altitude Himalayas (reaching up to 5,600m at Dolma La Pass) is unlike any standard travel. It is a demanding physical challenge and a sacred spiritual journey. Proper preparation guarantees your safety, physical comfort, and capability to absorb the divine energy of these holy spaces.

🧘 Physical & Medical Prep

  • Cardio Training: Start jogging, swimming, or brisk walking at least 2-3 months prior. Focus on building lung capacity and cardiovascular endurance.
  • Breathing Exercises: Practice Pranayama (specifically Anulom Vilom and Kapalbhati) daily to help your body adapt to thinner air at high elevations.
  • Acclimatization Aware: Expect to spend 1-2 days resting at intermediate altitudes (like Simikot or Taklakot) to adjust before undertaking active trekking.
  • Medical Clearance: Obtain explicit clearance from a doctor. Individuals with chronic respiratory diseases, asthma, or heart conditions are advised against these yatras.

🎒 Essential Packing List

  • Layered Clothing: Heavy down jacket, thermal inner wear, windproof jacket, fleece layers, woolen gloves, and warm hiking socks.
  • Trekking Gear: Sturdy, well-worn waterproof hiking boots, polar sunglasses, wide-brim hat, balaclava, and height-adjustable trekking poles.
  • Personal Medical Kit: Carry personal prescription drugs, altitude sickness pills (like Diamox), hydration salts (ORS), and moisturizers/lip balm.
  • Travel Documents: Keep original passports (with 9-month validity), physical voter ID cards, digital/physical visa photos, and permit printouts secure.

Code of Conduct: Do's & Don'ts

✔️ Sacred Do's

  • Hydrate Consistently: Drink 3-4 liters of water daily. Proper hydration is the single most effective way to combat altitude sickness (AMS).
  • Maintain a Prayerful Mindset: Walk with reverence, positive attitude, and focus on the spiritual depth of the pilgrimage. Connect with the holy chants.
  • Respect Local Traditions: Circumnavigate sacred shrines clockwise, wear modest clothing, and seek permission before taking pictures of locals or temples.
  • Pace Yourself: Walk slowly and steadily. Follow the classic high-altitude rule: "Pole, pole" (slowly, slowly). Save your energy.
  • Pack Out Trash: Keep the pristine Himalayan valleys and lakes clean. Carry a small personal bag to hold wrappers and waste.

Strict Don'ts

  • Avoid Alcohol & Smoking: Do not consume alcohol or smoke before or during the yatra. It severely hinders breathing and drastically increases AMS risks.
  • Do Not Overexert: Avoid running, jumping, or climbing rapidly. If you experience headache, nausea, or dizziness, notify the tour guide immediately.
  • Never Ignore Guide Instructions: Our guides are mountain experts who monitor local weather, political permit alerts, and route conditions. Follow them implicitly.
  • Avoid Direct Cold Exposure: Do not walk bare-eared or bare-handed in cold, windy conditions. Cover yourself to prevent hypothermia.
  • Do Not Take Gauri Kunda Water Home: Out of respect for sacred site regulations, take photographs and pray but do not litter or disturb the holy water bodies.
